Design, Order & Assemble Your Personal Mini Figure With Foldable.me

Occasionally we take some time out from reviewing web hosting packages, anti-malware apps and the latest gadgets to take a look at some more novelty aspects of geek culture.Foldable.me is one such Minecraft-inspired, web-to-print startup that adequately satisfies our desire for both great web design and geeky ornaments.
Simply design and order your boxy effigy online and Foldable will send you a flat-packed cardboard counterpart to anywhere in the world, complete with free postage. The service usually costs $11.99 but we’re giving away 5 figures for a combined total prize pool worth $60!
Read on to find out how you can win your own!

Design & Ordering

A Foldable can be a cheap but memorable and fun gift, although it isn’t a great last minute gift as you’ll have to contend with snail mail. My Foldable came all the way from the UK (where it was printed) to Australia in around a week and a half. On this basis, if you’re living in the US or mainland Europe allowing a week for delivery should be sufficient.

The Foldable.me figure creator is very easy to use, and if you’ve ever spent any time creating an avatar before you’ll know how this goes by now. Cycle through the available options for eyes, clothes, props and colours until you find something that sticks. It shouldn’t take you long to find a near-enough resemblance, and once you’ve registered you can save your designs and come back to them again.
You might find that Foldable works better for some friends than it does for others. This is due to the fact that complete customisation isn’t included, and rather you’ll have to choose from pre-made components rather than specifying your own. You can’t “stamp” decals like tattoos onto your finished figures, and you can’t create your own slogans on t-shirts either. It’s less personal than I’d like in an ideal world, but you can still come up with some good designs.

Delivery & Assembly

As you can see from the picture above, Foldable sent my figure all the way from the UK to Australia, only for the postman who delivered it to ignore the clear “DO NOT BEND” notice when putting it in my mail box.

Luckily for me, the fold was along one of the figure’s main perforations and so it didn’t actually affect the contents (no thanks to Australia Post). I gave the figure to my girlfriend to assemble, as it was a novelty gift to her in the end anyway.
Foldable promises “No glue, no mess!” and that’s pretty precise. Using folds and tabs, the recipient need only pop out the legs, arms, torso and head before assembling from the bottom up.
The figure is then held in place using tabs, and it feels pretty strong once assembled.
I did, at one point, drop the figure and my head fell off, but it didn’t take long to fix. The figure makes a nice addition to a desk, but be warned, you will probably have to order a few because everyone will want one once they’ve seen yours.
From ordering your figure to assembling and exhibiting it, Foldable does a lot for $12. You can’t find many personalised gifts for that price, and you can’t help but love the figure once its sitting proudly on your desk either. The only thing I’d ask for would be a few more customisation options – but that’s far from a complaint.
